Back in the days before the internet, these mom and pop record stores and the weirdos behind the counter were a lifeline to kids like me. That’s where I bought my first Ramones, Dead Boys, Butch Hancock and Devo albums and a lot more. I first met Mike when he worked at Karma Records in Greenwood, Indiana back in the early 80s. Dale is the singer in my all time favorite Indiana band, The Vulgar Boatmen (I’ve seen them over 100 times) and he wrote a book about Indiana high school basketball. Dale and Mike have been attending high school basketball games for the past 25 years and they’ve been to every high school gym in Indiana multiple times. I went to a high school basketball game with my buddies, Dale Lawrence and Mike Crowder. I guess that's the power of art.Ī post shared by Otis Gibbs on at 9:06am PST Uncategorized Even though I keep trying to think of his life, legacy and music, I keep thinking about sitting in a movie theater with my dad back in 1973. Buddy Holly's plane went down in an Iowa corn field 60 years ago today. I also remember looking over at my dad and seeing him crying because someone on the big screen just reaffirmed everything he believed about rock and roll in one simple quote. I remember sitting in the theater and being shocked to hear that quote about Buddy Holly because I'd heard my dad say the exact same thing a hundred times before. My dad was a first wave rock and roller who idolized Buddy, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee and he absolutely hated the Beatles, Stones and Dylan. There's a scene in American Graffiti where the cool greaser character, John Milner says, "Rock and roll's been going downhill ever since Buddy Holly died." I first saw that movie with my dad in our local theater when it first came out. #travel #neworleans #blackandwhite #blues #indianapolis #Indiana #soul #history #katrinaĪ post shared by Otis Gibbs on at 6:50am PST Uncategorized I crammed as much as I could into a 36 hour trip, and then I flew back home to Indiana. Most of my time was spent working on a very cool project that I'll tell you about sometime soon. Had some of the best biscuits I've had in a while at a diner, but I can't remember the name of the place. I woke up early before flying home and wondered through back alleys and side streets with Professor Longhair as my soundtrack. There was a parade passing in front of my hotel room. The water held a cold reminder of it's journey from up north. The breeze coming off the water was a good 15 degrees cooler than the air temperature in the city. I sat on the banks of the Mississippi for a while. Most of the wrought iron was made in Madison, Indiana and shipped down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River on it's way to New Orleans. I spent a couple of hours admiring wrought iron railings on beautiful old houses in the Garden District. I listened intently as she told me stories about Katrina and how it swallowed up the entire neighborhood we were sitting in. I sat with the great Irma Thomas at her kitchen table while she cooked red beans and rice. All rights reserved.A few random thoughts and photos about my recent visit to New Orleans.
